The entrance to the fort is in the southwest, protected by a ravelin. L'entrée du fort se situe au sud-ouest, protégée par un ravelin.

North was considered dangerous, so a large ravelin was built before the fort in this direction, as well as a lunette further out. Le Nord étant considéré comme dangereux, une grosse demi-lune était placée en avant du fort dans cette direction, ainsi qu'une lunette encore plus loin.

The following night, Frederick Henry in person led an assault on the ravelin which protected the gate of Mechelen, guarded by just a handful of Irish. Access to the fort was controlled by a caponier placed on a ravelin built into the rock in front of the pit itself crossed by a crane on rollers. L'accès au fort était contrôlé par une caponnière placée sur un ravelin incorporé à la roche au devant de la fosse, lui-même traversé par un pont roulant sur galets.

There were few changes made to the structure of the building, the most obvious being the increase in height of the north ravelin (the room which currently houses the cafeteria). This new gate obliged the military for technical reasons to correct the path of the Haxo wall, building a new line of wall square to the old wall down to the edge of the Isère River at the site of an old Ravelin fortification. Cette création oblige techniquement les militaires à redresser le cheminement de l'enceinte Haxo en construisant un nouveau tracé d'enceinte en équerre rejoignant le bord de l'Isère, à l'emplacement d'une ancienne demi-lune de fortification.
