The scriptorium was the workroom of monk copyists; here, books were copied, decorated, rebound, and conserved. Le scriptorium est le lieu de travail des moines copistes : les livres y sont copiés, décorés, reliés et conservés.

Originally, the workroom was connected to the Gallery through a small door sacrificed in the seventeenth century at the time of the establishment of the portrait collection. The cabinet intérieur (1740 plan #4) served a number of purposes: it housed part of Louis XV numismatic collection and collection of miniature paintings; it served as a dining room; and, it served as a workroom. The social and educational dimension of the McAll Mission was extremely important even though it was only one of its secondary aims: a free library was included in each meeting room; as early as February 1872 an open school had been launched, then in 1875 a first workroom for ladies, and in 1881 a free dispensary.
