Les Chinois s'engagèrent dans une production à grande échelle pour les exportations vers l'étranger à partir de la dynastie Tang, comme en atteste la découverte de l'épave de Belitung, un boutre arabe préservé dans le limon trouvé près de Belitung (Indonésie), et qui contenait 63 000 pièces de céramiques, d'argent et d'or (dont un bol Changsha avec une inscription de date : « 16e jour du septième mois de la seconde année du règne de Baoli », soit 826, date confirmée par une analyse au Carbone 14 de l'anis étoilé trouvé dans l'épave).
