By appointing key labour and youth leaders to the MPR Political Bureau, the regime hoped to harness syndical and student forces to the machinery of the state. CNT members declared that the prosecution sought to criminalize their organization: It was evident that the police weren't looking for anything nor anyone– they already had the culprits– it was just about intimidating the cenetistsa and scaring away from the organization thousands of affiliate workers that, although they identified with the syndical line of the anarcho-syndicalists, they weren't determined to go a long way in their support, let alone to defy such police repression. Le magazine Polémica résume ainsi l'affaire : « Il était évident que la police ne recherchait rien ni personne - elle avait déjà les coupables -, le seul but était d'intimider la CNT et de faire s'éloigner de l'organisation syndicale des milliers de travailleurs affiliés qui, bien qu'en accord avec la ligne politique des anarcho-syndicalistes, n'étaient pas disposés à les suivre au point d'affronter une répression policière de cette envergure.
